4th grade Initial Tiles

This lesson was a two-day assignment that my 4th graders completed not long ago. Next time I teach this lesson, I will talk about illuminated letters of the medieval time period. We just didn't have enough time to dive into that aspect of it this time around.

I have some 6" stencils I bought at a hardward store a few years ago and I used those to trace the initial for each student. Then I asked them to use a ruler and add a border. Sharpie was applied to create line designs inside the letter and throughout the border. Crayons added color and then a wash of watercolor for the background.
