I'm very impressed with how hard my 3rd graders work in the art room this year. They are a great group with tons of persistence! Even though some of the boys fought me a little on this project in particular (guess it was too mushy), they loved it in the end and I know they felt accomplished! We looked at the work of American artist, Robert Indiana and learned about drawing letters in 3-dimensions (which was nothing compared to drawing, cutting and arranging block letters correctly for printmaking!). Designs were traced with Sharpie and then colored with crayon. Washes of cool or warm watercolors were used in the background. We folded our 6x12 paintings into a rectangular form stabile and used a paper tab reinforced with glue and tape to keep it all together!
