2nd grade Leaf Abstractions

2nd graders were introduced to the artist, Georgia O'Keeffe and some of her paintings of leaves. We talked about how some of her paintings look more realistic and others, more abstract. I was so impressed with how the kids caught on to this concept so quickly.
After the introduction, we observed artificial leaves and how the veins on the leaves grow in different directions. Students worked from their own leaf and recorded the veins on their own paper. Students started with the central, main vein and drew it down the center. Then they each go to work drawing from observation. Once finished, they traced the pencil lines with a white oil pastel. Tempera cakes were used for the color and I emphasized painting two layers of color for really interesting colors.
These compositions were done on dark brown and orange construction paper and really made a nice base for the painted colors.
