2nd grade Heart Monoprints

I know this post is a little overdue since Valentine's Day was about a month ago, but I really wanted to share this great monoprint project! Monprints are a very paintery form of printmaking. It is, in my opinion, also very sophisticated! For 2nd graders, that's a little much to comprehend. The process is quick and simple and a little uncertain, but very spontaneous and fun.

The first step was to paint on top of a xerox copy of a heart. This step had to be done quickly and thickly. I think next year I will try adding some dishsoap to the tempera in order to prevent it from drying too fast which was frustrating for some.
Next, a piece of art paper was laid on top of the painting and students rubbed gently. The paint transferred resulting in a print! Hand coloring was added later using oil pastels to make them even more one-of-a-kind. Some students discovered through the process that they actually prefered the xerox copy over the print!
