1st grade Cinco de Mayo Flower Pots

1st graders learned about the Mexican tradition known as Cinco de Mayo, a celebration that honors Mexican culture and heritage. Students chose a small piece of cultural paper for a placemat and then put together two pieces of construction paper to create a pot. I asked them to create a pattern on the pot using a repetitive shape. Flowers were cut out using Fiskar scissors with fancy blades that I call "fun scissors." Oil pastels were the finishing touch to make the flowers whimsical and exciting.

  1. What a great project! I love the use of mixed media -- especially the funky scissors. These turned out really beautiful :)
